Using collage and sculpture, Natasha Monfared discusses the political position of women in Iran by highlighting their constant resistance against oppressive laws such as the compulsory veil and the ban on attending stadiums.
Monfared’s Iranian heritage drives her underlying concern on the political and cultural conflicts in Iran. She exposes current affairs affecting women’s place in society which takes place through social media.
Acting as a voice for these women who lack freedom of speech, Monfared raises awareness of a fleeting moment of protest caught in the media.
In 2018 she was selected for Empowerment as one of forty boundary breaking feminist artists for a show co-curated by Creative Debuts and Nasty Women in celebration of International Women’s Day in The Black & White Building, London.
Her first solo exhibition Women in Iran: Beyond the Gaze was hosted in June 2018 at the Sam Scorer Gallery, Lincoln after winning the Artescape Trust Award. She was also part of the conference From Violence to a Place of Power by the NoVo Foundation to end violence against all girls and women.
